Brautin – bindindisfélag ökumanna was founded on 29 September 1953. The goal of the organization is to promote traffic safety and encourage abstinence from alcoholic beverages.
Each person complying with Brautin’s bylaw can become a member.
The organization was founded under the name Bindindisfélag ökumanna but changed the name to Brautin bindindisfélag ökumanna in the year 2025.
Throughout the years, Brautin has been responsible for many widespread traffic safety projects in Iceland. Two examples are provided below.
Ökuleikni
Traffic Safety Competition
A competition held around Iceland with the goal of promoting safe driving. The best driver receives awards. For years we travelled around Iceland holding competitions in many small towns. Winner in each town would then participate in an Icelandic Championship tournament.
Ökuleikni was held annually from 1978 to 2004 but after that every few years.

Part of Ökuleikni has also involved trucks and buses, focusing on professional drivers and emphasize their importance on traffic safety.

Veltibíllinn
Roll Over Simulator
From 1995 to 2024 Brautin operated „Veltibíllinn“, a roll over simulator designed to promote use of seat belts.
The simulator travelled around Iceland offering people of all ages the chance to experience first-hand the importance of seat belts. During the period, over 400,000 passengers tried the car. In total 7 versions of VW Golf were used in the project.
In 2024, Brautin donated the simulator to The Icelandic association for search, rescue & injury prevention who have continued the project.
